The Social Dilemma

A 2020 documentary that pulled back the curtain on the industry that builds the apps most of us check first thing in the morning.

The Social Dilemma is a documentary directed by Jeff Orlowski that brings together former engineers, designers, and executives from companies like Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Pinterest — the very people who built the systems now shaping how billions of people think, feel, and behave.

Its central idea is simple and unsettling: if a platform is free, the user isn't the customer — the user's attention is the product being sold to advertisers. Every feature, from infinite scroll to autoplay to push notifications, was engineered by teams using behavioral psychology to keep people on the app for as long as possible, often at the cost of their wellbeing.

The film traces how this attention-driven business model has been linked to rising anxiety and depression among teenagers, the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories, and a slow erosion of shared truth and civil discourse. It closes with the people who built these systems calling for change — better regulation, redesigned incentives, and more honest products.

It's one of the clearest, most accessible entry points into understanding why NexUZ exists — and why we believe humane design has to become the default, not the exception.
